Whole Notes - April 19, 2010

Spring has sprung and thank heavens for that! Here in New England we are still drying out from all of the rain we've had. I hope that everyone is getting to enjoy
some good weather. Well, this is the first newsletter since T-Bone's passing...he is so sorely missed, I still can't believe he is gone. I hope everyone got a chance to catch the latest Live From Daryl's House last week. It was a wonderful show and great to see the entire band having a fab time. Looking back, I am certain the fellas are glad to have the memory of their last performance with T-Bone saved forever.

I know some folks out there were able to make it the the show in Austin, TX on March 27th....being the first show with the new lineup I know they were glad to see some familiar faces in the audience. The tour officially kicks off on April 24th in Atlanta, GA at the Chastain Park Amphitheater. Todd Rundgren will join the guys for that gig...a special treat for sure!! Well, enough of my editorial garble...let's get on with the show!!

NEW WEST COAST DATES - Some new tour dates have surfaced on the web for 2 California gigs as well as one in Richmond, BC. The inside skinny is that H&O will be on the west coast for a little over a week in late September. Catch the guys on September 24th @ the River Rock Casino and Resort in British Columbia. AAC tickets go on sale Monday April 19th @ 9AM local time. See the AAC Tickets page for further info!

In CA you can find them at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga on September 27th and the Table Rock Casino on September 29th in Friant, CA. Only the Mountain Winery show has been confirmed by the H&O camp and as always dates and venues can change. I should mention, however, that tickets for the Mountain Winery show go on sale on April 26th via the venue website. No word yet as to when and if AAC pre-sales will take place.

LFDH WEBBY NOD - That's right kids, LFDH.com has been nominated for Webby awards in two categories...both MUSIC and VARIETY! You must register with the site prior to voting. There have been some reported issues with the voting buttons and links...but they are working on fixing the problem. The LFDH Crew has put together a great GUIDE on the voting process. Now, what are you waiting for?....get over there and start voting!!!

Ooh, and don't forget to tune in on May 15th for the tribute to T-Bone! There are going to be some amazing guests paying homage to Bone.

7908' THE ASPEN SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL - John is teaming up with The Wheeler Opera House for 7908' The Aspen Songwriters Festival beginning September 16th through the 19th. John is working with the City of Aspen and is acting as the executive producer for the event! There are going to be some amazing artists taking part in this fest! Artists will be announced as we get closer to the event. This is a DO NOT MISS kids!!!!

UNTITLED DARYL SOLO ALBUM - Big D is currently in the studio recording his 5th solo record. Word on the street is that he is looking for a release date sometime in late 2010. Daryl is currently signed to the Verve label which currently boasts such talent as Jamie Cullum, Katharine McPhee, Diana Krall and John Fogerty among many others. No word yet as to what genre this album will lean towards. As we get additional details we'll be sure to fill you in!

JOHN OATES SOLO ALBUMS - John is currently working with 429 Records on a Blues/Folk album...possibly one of each. He began working with them during the recording of The Village which is a tribute album to the music of Greenwich Village NYC during the 60's. You can check that album out HERE.

LIVE AT THE APOLLO THEATER ANNIVERSARY - This Summer marks the 25th Anniversary of Daryl and John's historic performance at the Apollo Theater with Temptations, David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks. John mentioned in a recent interview that there may be the potential of an commemorative re-release of the famed concert. As fans we can only hope that this comes to fruition AND that they add in some behind-the-scenes footage!! Fingers crossed. I should also mention that this July 4th also marks the 25th Anniversary of The Liberty Concert! (Wouldn't a double DVD set be just what the doctor ordered??)

John Oates at The Aspen Songwriters Festival

Music Legend John Oates and The Wheeler Opera House

Team Up For

SEPTEMBER 16-19, 2010

ASPEN—April 12, 2010--Singer and songwriter John Oates will host the city’s first annual songwriters festival at the Wheeler Opera House, as well as the Belly Up Aspen club and other local venues in the historic artists’ haven of Aspen, Colorado. 7,908 feet is Aspen’s altitude.

Produced by the City of Aspen with Oates aboard as executive producer, the event will feature world renowned headlining artists, alongside famous and emerging new songwriters from all musical styles to perform their favorite works for the city’s residents and visiting music lovers. Such collaborations are certain to yield some memorable performances and behind-the-scenes stories as well.

As half the legendary duo Hall & Oates and member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Oates contributes both stature and insight to the Festival. “I’m inviting songwriters from all genres,” he says, “and asking them, ‘Who have you always wanted to play with but haven’t?’ Then we’ll see what happens. There has been a tremendous response to that question. I think it will result in some really spectacular collaborations and performances. We’re also at a significant inflection point in the world of songwriting where there are these exciting cross-currents taking place between generations. We want to encourage and nurture this aspect and provide a destination where this evolution can flourish.”

Working with Oates to make 7908’ THE ASPEN SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL spectacular are the management and staff of Aspen’s 1889-vintage theater, the Wheeler Opera House. Last year, Oates and the Wheeler staged a three-part singer-songwriter series called “The Stories Behind The Songs.” “That was a great first collaboration,” says Wheeler Executive Director Gram Slaton, “and John had a lot of ideas afterwards that he wanted to explore for something bigger and better. So this festival concept seems like a logical expansion of that original songwriter series.”

A long-time resident of Aspen, Oates determined from the outset that the 2010 event wouldn’t be just another music festival. “The City of Aspen has a great tradition of bringing together the best and the brightest minds and souls in the world to be inspired, share their idea and create in one of the most beautiful places on earth,” Oates explains. “My thought was to expand that vision, to create a festival that would celebrate songwriting in its purest form—the writers, their words and their music. This is not about bands and big productions but rather an opportunity for the public to see and hear these amazingly talented songwriters in an intimate setting with high quality acoustics. It all starts with a song and we will celebrate that.”

Founded as a mining town in the late 1870s, Aspen has long been known for nourishing the arts. Starting with the Aspen Music Festival in 1949, the city has become a gathering place for musicians who have an abiding respect for nature and a sincere appreciation of each other’s talents. Musician-writers from John Denver to Burt Bacharach have staked out turf there, as have various members of The Eagles, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Joe Cocker, and many others.

“What we want to do with the Festival,” says Slaton, “is grow yet another branch on the creative aspen tree, and I can’t imagine a better partner to work with in this than John. He is so committed to every kind of music, and encouraging new songwriting talent is a real passion for him. He has originated an ongoing student songwriting competition among kids in the Roaring Fork Valley and has been jamming with everyone who comes to town from The Neville Brothers, Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas to Blues Traveler and Donovan Frankenreiter. His energy is truly infectious and a wonder of nature. I think we’re going to knock this Festival out of the park its very first year.”

For more information on 7908’ THE ASPEN SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL please call Wheeler Opera House Executive Director Gram Slaton at 970-920-5790 or email him at gram.slaton@ci.aspen.co.us.
